Under Discernment’s Wings
This is a book cover design and illustration created for J.M. Dryden’s book, Under Discernment’s Wings. The book features the main character of this book, which is a dragon whose name is Discernment.
The Process.
Thumbnails
The first thing the client was sent were thumbnail sketches for possible layouts of the book design.
There were 4 options to choose from, and the chosen cover layout was #3.
The Sketch
After a few revisions with the author, here is where the final sketch landed. The red lines mark where the spine and trim of the book will be to help the author visualize her book.
Flat Colors
The first flat colors render to see if the author was happy with the shades of purple chosen. The colors were approved, so the process continues.
Behind the Scenes
The beginnings of the illustration being rendered.
The rendering process began with adding texture, shading, and lighting to the face of Discernment.

The cover is completely illustrated and designed with various typography choices. Complete with a book description, website, author credits, title, and a quote from the book.
